A Merry Christmas From Overseas Investors
US Based Company sacks 300 Scottish workers
just in time for Christmas.
Kaiam - Livingston
How many times does the Scottish government at Holyrood and the UK government at Westminster release triumphant press statements announcing their success in finding either a foreign investor or over seas buyers for Scottish companies and industries, promising jobs and boosts to the Scottish economy?
In 2014 the Scottish government agency, Scottish Enterprise, made an £850,000 grant (taxpayer's money) to the US based computer company Kaiam to persuade the international operator to move some of its computer production from China to Scotland.
Now in December 2018 things have changed. On December 20th Kaiam gave notice to all its production staff at Livingston not to report for work up to Christmas Day and also announced that the 300 workers would not be paid. Then on December 24th Kaiam told Livingston staff that the production plant was going to be 'moth-balled' and all 300 production staff were sacked.
The London based financial administrators KPMG are handling the insolvency and state that KPMG are looking for a buyer for the company. In the best traditions of global companies, KPMG have told the sacked Kaiam workforce that they will need to individually apply to the UK government insolvency service for their unpaid December wages.
So 300 Scottish workers sacked without a month's wages just in time for Christmas, I wonder how Scottish Enterprise are going to explain all this?
Oh ! And while we are on the subject, what about the 2 Sisters chicken processing plant at Cambuslang, which recently shut down.
The financial geniuses at Scottish Enterprise had also given a huge financial grant to 2 Sisters to keep production going until 2020 - so what happened there?
So much for foreign ownership of British industries and overseas investment in Scotland.
Isn't Global Capitalism wonderful?
