BM Scotland - Asylum seekers are overwhelming Glasgow homeless services.

British Movement Scotland. - Asylum seekers are overwhelming Glasgow homeless services.

Multiculturalism Policies Directed From Holyrood :- Asylum seekers are overwhelming Glasgow homeless services and the Labour Government Don't Care..

Since the beginning of this year there have been repeated reports and warnings about the situation in Glasgow. Even mainstream media outlets both in print and on-line have joined in the warnings and sounding the alarm.

Numerous newspapers and news on line have reacted including the Glasgow Times, the Scotsman, the Daily Record and the Scottish Sun.

A few extracts here:

"Refugees homeless crisis 'unsustainable' for Glasgow"

20th January. Asylum seekers. Glasgow City Council. Refugees and immigration

"Hundreds of homeless refugees are travelling to Glasgow after being granted leave to remain."

"Hundreds of homeless refugees are travelling to Glasgow after being granted leave to remain. The situation, which added to the growing crisis in homeless services, has led to officials to warn the situation “unsustainable” for Glasgow to continue to commit to taking the same level of asylum seekers."

"The situation, which added to the growing crisis in homeless services, has led to officials to warn the situation “unsustainable” for Glasgow to continue to commit to taking the same level of asylum seekers.

Glasgow takes almost all the asylum seekers coming to Scotland (95%) despite a plan to have more people dispersed to other areas.

The remaining 5% of asylum are dispersed across 17 other local authorities with 14 local authorities in Scotland accommodating no asylum seekers.

The city declared a housing emergency in 2023 and since then has spent millions of pounds trying to cope and ensure people are accommodated.

Despite the city willingly housing thousands of asylum seekers the UK Home Office only gives £750 a year per asylum seeker, leaving the city to fund the rest.

It has led to the council and health board digging into reserves to the tune of £11m to cover the increase in costs.

In a report into homelessness, the Glasgow Integration Joint Board (IJB) has said the city cannot afford to continue to take part in the asylum seeker dispersal scheme to the extent it has.

Jim McBride, head of homelessness and complex needs, said: “Whilst Glasgow has always been, and will continue to be, a welcoming city for those fleeing persecution, it is evident that an increase in asylum cases as well as an increase in domestic demand, the crisis in the housing market and funding constraints make it challenging for Glasgow to continue to commit to the national framework in relation to asylum seekers and refugees.

“It is unsustainable for the city of Glasgow and is placing significant strain on the authority’s Homelessness Service.”

And this....

"In the space of a year homeless applications from people who had been granted leave to remain doubled from 1300 applications in 2022/23  to 2600 in 2023/24.

In the last year as a result of Home Office decisions, the cost to services in Glasgow is estimated to be £26.5m.

It will be funded by £11.6m from reserves and the council committed to paying the remaining £14.9m.

Glasgow currently has 4103 asylum seekers.

When they get a decision form the Home Office they are no longer entitled to accommodation through the asylum system and many present to the council as homeless.

On top of that, there are many more who get a decision elsewhere in the UK who then travel to Glasgow seeking housing, placing even more strain on services.

Mr McBride added: “In 2023/24, Glasgow received 599 homelessness applications from those granted leave to remain out with the city and in 2024/25 (up to 17th December 2024) a further 527 applications have been made.

“Homelessness Services are given no advanced notification of these households and receive no additional funding for them.”

The Labour Government of 'Two Tier' Keir Starmer is turning a deaf ear.....

"Labour minister snubs Glasgow asylum seeker summit despite 'unprecedented pressure'"

"Labour’s asylum minister has refused to attend a summit on pressures placed on Glasgow despite being in the city when talks take place."

And this in the GLASGOW TIMES

"UK asylum minister rejects invite to meeting about homeless crisis in Glasgow"

"THE UK Government minister responsible for asylum seeker policy has declined a request to meet with local politicians and support groups while on a visit to Glasgow
Angela Eagle, minister of state for border security and asylum is due to visit Glasgow next month.
She was invited to a roundtable meeting with senior councillors, the Scottish Refugee Council and Scottish Government representatives to discuss the unique pressures facing Glasgow with the high number of asylum seekers dispersed to the city.

The council wanted to state the case for more support for Glasgow to deal with the homelessness crisis that has resulted from the acceleration of asylum claims and hundreds more refugees reporting to the council as homeless.

Allan Casey, Convener for Homelessness, has written to the minister asking her to reconsider.
He said almost 1,000 people with leave to remain have accessed Glasgow’s homelessness services who have been given a decision elsewhere in the UK.
More than half of homeless households in temporary accommodation in Glasgow are from households who have been granted leave to remain, which he said is putting enormous financial strain on services.
Councillor Casey told the minister: “We want to discuss these issues with you in person so that we can, collectively, come to an agreed way forward which continues Glasgow’s proud history as a dispersal city, while balancing the ongoing needs of our communities, and which funds us appropriately for the impact that your decisions are having.

Over 4,000 asylum seekers flock to Glasgow and damage 'social cohesion' as they take advantage of generous housing rules.

Glasgow City Council has demanded a meeting with UK Government Asylum Minister Angela Eagle over growing levels of immigration to the city, with thousands declaring themselves homeless."

So much for establishment politicians listening to the local government officials...

The New 'Woke' Hero for the Political Left and Progressive Liberals in Scotland.

Mhairi Black

Mhairi Black, the former SNP Member of Parliament for Paisley and Renfrewshire South is currently being hailed by left-wing journalists after her appearance on a BBC Two documentary about her life, "Mhairi Black; Being Me Again."

As a living example to the progressive left, Mhairi Black ticks all the boxes, she was the youngest MP to enter the House of Commons since 1832, when she was elected as an SNP MP aged just 20 years of age. Plus she is a lesbian and she has a 'neuro-diversity condition' having been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Black has now stepped down from Westminster politics but has sought out new audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe,  appearing on stage as a political stand-up comedian.

As we say - Mhairi Black ticks all the boxes for the 'Woke'.
